Popular picks who won’t be in my GW1 side

Mohamed Salah
There is a real chance I will be going into GW1 without the king of FPL.

Liverpool start the 2023-24 campaign with a trip to Chelsea, an opponent Salah doesn’t have the best of records against.

The Egyptian international has scored just twice in his last six games against Chelsea and has just the single goal at Stamford Bridge as a Liverpool player to his name.

With Arsenal and Manchester United both having favourable starts to the season, I believe going no Salah could be a risk worth taking.

Harry Kane
There remains a lot of uncertainties surrounding Harry Kane going into the new season, the main one being, where will he be playing football?

Bayern Munich appear favourites to sign the striker as the England captain continues his search for a first career medal. Manchester United have also been linked, but Spurs owner Daniel Levy is reluctant to sell to another Premier League side.

Once again Tottenham enter a campaign with a new manager and although Ange Postecoglou will bring about a more exciting approach, results, as always with Spurs, are not guaranteed.

All of this combined with the fact Erling Haaland will be a shoe in for most managers, you’ve got to question whether there is space for two premium striker options given the price rises expected elsewhere.

Kieran Trippier
Returns were easy to come by for Kieran Trippier in the first half of the 22-23 campaign, but there was a noticeable drop off from February.

Newcastle kept 12 clean sheets in their first 20 matches, compared to just 2 in the final 18. Trippier’s attacking returns also diminished around the same period and those that risked going without from around March time really felt the benefit.

Newcastle face sides that finished in the top nine of the 22-23 season in their opening five games and probably have the toughest start in the division.

Trent Alexander Arnold’s form towards the end of the previous campaign means Trippier probably won’t be in as many teams as expected.
